“I will protect you”

Sometimes I feel really vulnerable when I am painting; at times, even afraid. The type of fear that surfaced when I was painting this was the fear of rejection, of missing the mark, and of doubt (can a painting can ever really say exactly what I want it to say?)

As I pushed through it, I realized that perhaps it was more than just me…there must be a message behind this. I began to enjoy the process of discovery, especially when I realized the name of this piece:  “I will protect you.”

It is remarkable to consider how birds survive the winter.  Yet, somehow they are protected.   I have included a tiny bird in the last few paintings because there is something about the song of a tiny, lonely little thing that I could identify with.  Although birds do not have a single possession to their name, they live in profound provision and freedom. I want to live like that too.

As odd as it sounds, writing & painting seem to come alive before I understand them. There's a certain permission to letting go of producing something dignified, but once I have crossed that line anyway, the paint wildly hits the fan and the only thing to do is make art with it. I'm not on a self-improvement journey, I'm on a self-discovery journey. And now that I wrote that, I want to delete it because it sounds selfish. Instead of editing it out, it's my gift to you: "I'll scribble first." Art that heals is worth the journey. And no canvas is ever finished anyway. Because life. And life is a good thing, because sometimes the canvas. is. a. mess.

  1. It would seem you hit the mark dead center. It was very easy to discern the little bird in the insert panel.

And you count far more to him than birds.

    1. I’ve heard that from a few people actually. Because I was feeling different fears when I was painting it, I have no doubt that came across. The bird is safe, but only if it stays in the light!
